What to Know about the $8k Homebuyer Tax Credit

The US Congress has recently enacted legislation to offer a tax credit to buyers in order to motivate homebuyers & to get the economy on track. The new credit can give homebuyers with a credit up to $8000, although it is restricted to persons who will be purchasing a home for the 1st time and is only good for purchases that occur between 1/1/09 and December 1, 2009. The new credit doesn't need to be repaid over time, however, unlike prior tax credits that had been offered to buyers.

Buyer Credit Extended for Persons Already Under Contract

For those who missed the Homebuyer Tax Credit, there is some positive news: the tax credit has once again received an extension. Directed into play on July 2, the US Homebuyer Assistance & Improvement Act of 2010, which was largely backed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, has extended the closing deadline from June 30 to September 30 for homebuyers who had gone under contract by April 30. Thus, while it is not going to help individuals who didn't get the ball rolling by the April deadline, individuals who had trouble with closing on the deal on time can still receive the $8,000 credit for first time homebuyers in addition to the $6,500 credit for non-first-time homeowners that are purchasing a new property.
